What is the EYE?

EYE is a European network of young engineering professionals and students sharing knowledge, fostering mobility and developing personal and professional skills. In the mid-1990s, Europe’s views and feelings were growing together faster and faster; the expansion towards Eastern Europe and the Baltic was approaching. For the engineering profession, this posed many challenges: changes in engineering education; the resulting higher mobility in Europe; mutual recognition of diplomas and professional experiences.

Confronted with increasing international co-operation in their professional engineering projects, young engineers saw the need to be better prepared for the European market. National engineering associations could and still can only partly provide the answer to those questions and give support to their members, especially their students and young engineers. Consequently young members of the European engineers’ organisations created a pan-European platform and founded the European Young Engineers (EYE) in 1994. During the following years several engineering associations in Europe were invited to join and EYE rapidly grew.

EYE became a dynamic and rapidly growing organisation with enthusiastic members, rapidly consisting of more than 18 associations and representing more than 150.000 young engineers in Europe. EYE started to offer its member organisations and their students and young engineers the access to a Europe-wide network by linking the engineering associations.

Why Bulgaria?

Bulgaria is one of the oldest European states. It is situated in the Southeastern part of Europe, at the heart of the Balkan Peninsula. It was founded in 681 A.D., and inherits the traditions of multitude of ancient cultures, which inhabited these lands. The Bulgarians adopted the Christianity as early as the IXth century, developed an astounding culture and became one of the most influential political force in Medieval Europe. This rich history means it has preserved many treasures from antiquity, as well as modern monuments and architectural wonders, aquaducts, fortresses, civic halls…

Bulgaria joined the European union in 2007, and now in 2018, it will host The Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This gives a number of opportunities to show the country and share the Bulgarian agenda within Europe. The young engineers at the conference will visit to the most interesting historical places in Sofia, like the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, the National historical Museum. Of course there wouldn’t be an EYE conference without discussions on hot and current topics during the workshops. Therefore is chosen for a workshop part with a focus on sharing engineering experiences. Hope to see you all in Sofia from May 18th till the 20th.
